WHAT HAPPENED TO WHITE STEEL WHEELS?

You know that saying, ‘no point reinventing the wheel’? Well, I feel that has been forgotten with the 4X4 game of late. Wheel technology is out of control! There are so many different styles, colours, patterns, beadlocks, fake beadlocks… it goes on. And this is a marvellous thing really, as it means there are more options than you can poke a stick at when it comes to accessorising your pride and joy.

Alloy wheels are great, too. I’ve run a set on my GQ for years now. Having said that, I found the original vehicle sales brochure from 1989 – and the hero shot on the cover shows that white steel wheels with a set of 31-inch Desert Duellers were an option on the top-of-the-line ST model. Talk about luxury!

So whatever happened to the old white steel wheels? Sure, people still run steel wheels… but most are black with fancy D-shaped holes or Daytona-inspired designs. It begs the question: Why do people feel white steel wheels are uncool?

I recently purchased a set of second-hand white steel wheels and immediately painted them black, as that’s the thing you do. But why?

I propose we see if we can buck that trend, as a group. If you have a set of white steel wheels on your 4X4, I want you to post a picture on our facebook page with the hashtag #whitesteelies. Like all trends, it only takes a small number of people to get the ball rolling. Let’s see if we can bring them back!
