How many off-road drivers cut their teeth in an older 4X4? The number would have to be massive. These days we’re all surrounded by multiple on-board computers, sat-nav, power seats and plenty of creature comforts – but many of us still view these older trucks with a fair amount of nostalgia and, more than likely, would love to buy one and have it in the garage as a weekend playtoy. Apparently industry giants ARB feel the same way. They’ve recently completed a thorough overhaul and a long list of upgrades on five classic 4X4s that kick-started generations of off-road passion – the Toyota HiLux, GQ Patrol, Land Rover Defender, TJ Wrangler and the iconic FJ40 LandCruiser.

The idea behind each build was to stay true to the original roots of each vehicle, but add practical aftermarket gear to increase both comfort and capability to a point where anyone who’s bruised their kidneys in an old leaf-sprung shorty would be shaking their head in disbelief.

The projects were undertaken by ARB stores all over the country, and even ARB USA wanted to get involved with the ubiquitous (in the States at least) TJ Wrangler. And the results are nothing short of perfect. Nothing over the top; just good quality common-sense mods that turn even old-tech 4WDs into vehicles that you wouldn’t hesitate to load up and pilot on a trip to any destination in the country.

ISUZU I-VENTURE CLUB

It takes a special sort of vehicle manufacturer to encourage owners to actually use its 4X4s off-road!

The I-Venture club is a 4X4 group set up by Isuzu for its owners to get out, build their off-road driving skills and head off on a bunch of amazing trips with a bunch of like-minded enthusiasts. While we wouldn’t ordinarily feature a club on these pages, we have to say what these guys do is mightily impressive… and the fact that it’s the brainchild of one of the largest automotive manufacturers in the world only makes it cooler in our view.

And the club does some great work, too. Just one example: In August this year the guys are planning a major clean-up of Queensland’s Moreton Island. This includes assigning members a dedicated 4WD trainer, as well as providing brekky and lunch. So if you’re considering buying an MU-X or D-MAX and want to get shown the ropes by some passionate professionals who know your vehicle (and just what it’s capable of) better than you likely ever will, make sure you get in quick – as spots are limited.

The I-Venture club runs plenty of trips and events, so jump onto the website and check it out.
