A little about Ranger Barry Lyon

By Laura Boshammer 2 Min Read

Barry has worked as a ranger for over thirty years, mostly on remote national parks on Cape York, but also in Queensland’s wet tropics, far west, and Gulf Country.

As a self-employed bush guide he also took people on small group bush expeditions, sharing his passion for tropical Australia’s unique nature and rich heritage with both international and Australian visitors, carrying out wildlife surveys and providing field support for documentary film crews.

Driving a fair range of four-wheel-drives over the years has given Barry great respect for most makes and models. His favourite, and current vehicle though, is a 1988 Isuzu powered Land Rover 110. With just on 600,000 kilometres on the clock, it goes as hard as ever living on Cape York and travelling Outback Australia.

Barry currently works as a ranger on the isolated Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve on northern Cape York, bush camping for 8 months of the year. Involvement in research into crocodiles and the very rare spear tooth shark in the Wenlock River add extra variety to the usual ranger tasks.

Barry is absolutely passionate about showcasing Australia’s amazing landscapes and ecology through writing, photography, and bush guiding, and helping people to genuinely connect with natural world.
