Jeep reckons you can re-charge in the outback

There’s no two ways about it. EVs are the future. We can moan and groan as much as we want about diesel being in our veins, the manufacturers just don’t care. On paper, an EV makes far more sense to produce. With ever-tightening emissions regulations, converting existing models to at least partial electrification is a way to future-proof their lines.

It adds up for 4X4ers too. At least on paper. The instant torque electric motors can provide is unrivalled by anything internal combustion can offer. With the right implementation, it can also give us some pretty phenomenal features off-road too. Crab walk anyone?

Sure, there’s bush fixability concerns, but how many 4X4ers are able to rebuilt a common-rail injection pump track side anyway?

The only real downside against a late model internal combustion engine (ICE) is range anxiety. But Jeep reckon they can fix that.

To ensure their new range of ‘4XE’ hybrid and electric models are taken seriously, Jeep have begun a roll-out of charging stations seemingly in the middle of nowhere. The units, developed by Electrify America, are entirely off-grid utilising a clever solar panel setup instead. A built-in motor up-top angles the solar array ensuring it’s getting maximum charge input. As long as there’s a sun to point it at.

The initial roll-out is in the U.S. with solar chargers at popular off-road locations like the Rubicon and Moab. Jeep have gone on the record at the recent Detroit Auto Show that they’re looking to roll out the system in Australia.

With a level 2 charger giving around 140km range charge and Jeep’s upcoming Grand Cherokee having over 600km range you’d be able to knock over Cape York with a few chargers strategically placed along the route.

Eventually, level 3 chargers would be on the radar. With a 70km charge available for every 10mins plugged in you could re-charge an entire battery while you’re having a pub lunch.

With Jeep struggling for sales in Australia in recent years it’s not known when we can expect the solar chargers to pop up. But we are keen to see what creative ways manufacturers can keep us out in the bush.
