Australians first had a love affair with big V8 petrol engines powering their vehicles. Then turbo-diesel dual-cab utes became a more common sight than tradies at happy hour. We here at Unsealed 4X4 love our turbo-diesel engines, and it seems that on the whole the Australian market are only interested in turbo-diesel engines backed by automatic transmissions.  Infiniti (owned by Nissan) has just released what it believes to be the best internal combustion engine ever built… and it achieved this in a rather interesting way. Variable valve timing certainly isn’t a new advancement, but this Infiniti VC-T internal combustion engine uses variable compression ratios with a series of multi-link crankshafts that allow the compression ratio to advance from 8:1 to 14:1 when required. The theory behind this is building an engine that is as frugal as a diesel motor when required, yet revy and powerful when you need more oomph for overtaking. Infiniti say this engine will be as efficient as a 4-cylinder yet as smooth as a V6. But what do you think… is this enough to make you want to sell your old faithful oil-burner? Or is this technology still too new to know?
