Austrack Stockton X3 camper trailer packs off-grid capability into a compact rig

If your idea of a good trip involves a 4WD, a dirt track and a campsite far from the nearest caravan park, then the Austrack Stockton X3 camper trailer is worth a further look.

Austrack Campers has added another option to its lineup with the Stockton X3 camper trailer, a compact off-road touring setup that combines a manageable towing weight with a surprisingly well-equipped off-grid system.

The Stockton X3 appears to tick a lot of boxes for those who want a relatively compact camper trailer that still delivers plenty of creature comforts away from powered sites.

Compact size with a strong off-grid setup

One of the standout features on the Stockton X3 is the electrical setup, which is clearly aimed at campers planning longer stays away from powered campsites.

The camper trailer comes equipped as standard with:

• 600W solar panels
• Two 230Ah lithium batteries (460Ah total)
• Renogy power management system
• 2000W inverter
• 100A AC charger
• 50A DC-DC charger with MPPT solar controller

The system is controlled via a touchscreen interface and mobile app, allowing users to monitor and manage their power usage while travelling.

That combination should provide a decent amount of off-grid capability for running appliances, gear and lighting on longer camping trips.

Designed with off-road touring in mind

From a towing and durability perspective, the Stockton X3 appears to have rougher touring conditions in mind.

Key features listed in the specs include:

• Fully welded hot-dipped galvanised chassis and drawbar
• McHitch 3.5T full off-road coupling
• Independent suspension system
• Pedders twin shock absorbers
• 6-stud 4×4 hubs
• 10-inch electric brakes

The camper trailer rides on 235/65 R16 tyres, and the independent suspension will help improve stability when travelling on uneven tracks.

With an ATM of 2500kg and a tare weight of around 1840kg, it’s also lighter than many caravans, which will appeal to travellers who want a more manageable tow behind their 4WD.

Interior layout and sleeping setup

Inside, the Stockton X3 is designed to sleep up to three people, with a king-size bed and a dining area that converts into a single bed.

The interior uses composite construction materials with timber-style finishes, while under-seat storage cabinets help maximise available space.

Indoor and outdoor cooking options

Like many modern camper trailers, the Stockton X3 includes both internal and external cooking setups.

Inside the camper, the kitchen includes a microwave, a four-burner cooktop, a grill and a fridge. Outside, there’s a slide-out kitchen featuring another multi-burner gas cooktop, sink, pantry storage and a bar-style prep counter.

The trailer also includes an external slide-out fridge, giving travellers additional cold storage for longer trips.

Comfort features for off-grid camping

Beyond the power system and kitchen setup, the Stockton X3 includes a range of features designed to make off-grid camping comfortable.

These include:

• Diesel heater
• Instant hot water system
• Reverse cycle air-conditioner
• External hot and cold shower with ensuite tent
• Electric push-button awning with anti-flap kit and three detachable walls
• Starlink connectivity port

There’s also 120L and 80L freshwater tanks, plus an 80L grey water tank, which should support extended stays away from facilities.

Quick setup for touring

Austrack says the camper trailer is designed to make campsite setup quick and straightforward.

The Stockton X3 features a push-button electric lift roof and a slide-out bed system. Combined with the electric awning, this should make it easier to get camp set up fairly quickly after a long day behind the wheel.

Who is Austrack’s Stockton X3 camper trailer for?

For travellers looking at camper trailers rather than full caravans, the Stockton X3 is definitely worthy of a longer look.

We haven’t had a chance to try this one out in person yet, but based on the specs released by Austrack, it’s clearly positioned as a camper trailer that tries to balance compact towing with modern off-road and off-grid camping conveniences.
