A lot of us as four-wheel drivers are a bit reluctant to accept and embrace new technology in our vehicles. I know this, because I’m one of those people who still punts around in a mechanically injected diesel who prefers his traction control to be a locker button, his interior trim to be vinyl and his warning chimes kept to a bare minimum. The less to go wrong the better and if anything does go wrong, chances are I can fix it with a shifter and some cable-ties.

At least that was how I used to think. The past few months has got me reassessing a few things about modern vehicles. Yes, they’re overly complicated; yes, they take the driver out of the equation to a, frankly, alarming degree; yes, they beep incessantly and annoyingly at you until you’re rubbing your belly and patting your head while facing exactly due north… but they’re also getting pretty good at a lot of things. Take traction control for example.
