The Katadyn BeFree is a portable water-filtering flask that the manufacturers claim filters out 99.999% (we didn’t make that figure up) of the bacteria and protozoan cysts (we don’t know what that means either) found in lakes, rivers and streams. This means you will have access to clean drinking water wherever you roam. The filter cartridge can be cleaned after use, and Katadyn tells us one filter can process 1,000 litres of water before needing replacement. And no, you don’t need a biophysics degree to clean the filter; all you need to do is add clean water, shake (or stir, if that’s your thing) the water over the filter… and it is ready for your next hike, or trip to the Sydney Easter Show.
