In today’s day and age, it’s pretty bloody easy to rack up a bill totalling more than what a small house would cost. Building a 4×4 once upon a time was cheap and budget-friendly however now, well, I think we all know that’s not quite the case.
Chopped and extended 200 Series ‘Cruisers, insane 79s, Y62 Patrols with all the fruit and everything in between can all become $250,000+ vehicles quite quickly. Today, however, I’m diving into the world of even more extreme! Yep, these are my top 5 luxury off-road weapons that cost MORE than an apartment!
Dartz Prombron ‘Black Stallion’ Starting at $600,000 AUD
You’d be forgiven for having never heard of the Dartz Prombron before. Based on a Hummer H2, the Latvian tank manufacturer has delved more and more into the realm of luxury offroad 4X4s in recent times, producing what we now know as the Black Stallion Prombron.
This brashly styled status symbol has an interior that will suit the most flamboyant of owners, plastered with alligator hide and leather throughout. There’s blacked-out skull emblems throughout the bodywork and even a 6X6 variant available, so yep, this thing means business. With a 500hp V8 in the front and bulletproof tyres, this ridiculous monster is something we could absolutely get around!
Mercedes-Benz ‘G63 AMG 6X6’ Starting at $590,000 AUD
The G63 6X6 is one of the undisputed kings of the luxury off-road market. They have big tyres; they have a big body, and they have an even bigger price tag. The Mercedes 6X6 is an off-road rig that is on pretty much every Aussie’s wish list.
All 6 wheels drive, it stands at over 2.3m tall standard, weighs nearly 4000kgs, it has factory portal axles, and optimises remote reservoir Ohlin’s shocks to provide an elite ride quality that is pretty much unmatched. If that isn’t enough to sell you, then the sound of the 500+hp bi-turbo 5.5L V8 petrol engine should get you across the line!
Aston Martin ‘DBX707’ Starting at $428,000 AUD
The DBX707 is a luxurious monster capable of tackling some sweet off-road tracks. You might be wondering where the ‘707’ in its name comes from. Well, isn’t it obvious? This 707hp beast will rocket you to 100km/h in under 3.5 seconds yet has a stack of off-road features that will make you feel like you’re the king of the next 4×4 track you tackle.
When selecting ‘Terrain’ or ‘Terrain+’ mode, the suspension will automatically lift the car nearly 50mm additionally over the standard ride height. The intelligent Aston Martin AWD system is extremely capable and with the factory ‘grip and hill decent control’ you feel in complete control when off the black top. Which is comforting because taming over 700hp is no easy task.
Rolls-Royce Cullinan with the Delta 4×4 Kit starting at $912,000 AUD
The Cullinan is one classy off-road SUV, there’s no denying that, but what’s better than having just a classy Rolls? A classy and CAPABLE Rolls obviously! If you’ve just parted with your $690,000 for a standard Cullinan and then decided you want to splurge the extra $220,000 on the Delta kit, then you’ll be provided with what is one of the most luxurious super-tourer vehicles in the world.
For the money, you’ll obviously have the base vehicle, a nearly 600hp V12 powered all-wheel drive luxury land-yacht. Additionally, however, with the German built Delta 4X4 kit, you’ll get a bespoke front bar, raised suspension, off-road wheels and tyres, a rooftop tent, a snorkel, a custom exhaust, underbody protection, 10 spotlights and a custom widebody to help cover the new rubber.
If you ask me, totally worth it.
Mercedes-Benz ‘G650 Maybach Landaulet’ starting at $1,890,000 AUD
Yep, there’s another Mercedes in my top 5, but before you rip my head off, let me justify this last-minute addition! For nearly two million Aussie dollars, you can have the king of kings, the Zeus of the 4X4 world, the G650 Maybach Landaulet.
There was under 100 of these bad boys ever made, the landaulet body style is reminiscent of 1930’s coach builders and has an AMG V12 to help propel it through any offroad obstacle. Like the 6X6, it has portal axles which means epic under-diff clearance, has an electronic fabric roof to enclose the rear section, has nearly half a meter of ground clearance under the body, and over 1000Nm of torque.
This Maybach-built bespoke piece of art is at home in a collector’s gallery or the Old Tele Track, and that’s why I’m obsessed. Although the price tag is eye-watering no matter how rich you are!
