Isuzu’s updated MU-X is absolutely killing it with Aussie buyers right now. The facelifted 25MY seven-seater has been smashing all-time sales records since it arrived in March. You probably already know the MU-X is one of the most popular SUVs, and it wrapped up 2024 as Australia’s sixth best-selling four-wheel drive overall. In the large SUV segment under $80,000, it grabbed third spot. Early 2025 deliveries were a bit slow due to limited stock of the outgoing 24MY models, but once the updated range hit showrooms, demand went through the roof.
Between May and July, Isuzu UTE Australia shifted 5,311 MU-Xs. That’s 1,643 in May, 2,033 in June (beating the previous record), and 1,635 in July. The top-spec X-Terrain has been the real star of the show. Buyers are loving its sweet spot of comfort, updated tech, serious towing grunt, and off-road ability.
The updated tech now includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as part of the infotainment upgrades plus, you’ll also find multiple USB-C ports for keeping your devices charged. Higher trims give you ambient interior lighting and leather accented upholstery, which really lifts the cabin’s premium feel. The X-Terrain stands out even more with red stitching as a premium interior detail.
“With its effortless combination of capability, value, and versatility, our ambition was for the new MU-X to be well received,” says Junta Matsui, Managing Director of Isuzu UTE Australia. “But these results have confirmed just how strongly Isuzu UTE’s all-purpose SUV resonates with a broad cross section of Australians.”
In 2024, Isuzu moved 17,978 MU-Xs nationwide, cementing it as one of Australia’s top-selling large SUVs. For 2025, the momentum’s still going strong with 9,453 units sold year-to-date. That gives the MU-X an 11.3 per cent slice of the large SUV segment. It sits behind the Toyota LandCruiser Prado with 17,922 YTD sales (21.4 per cent) and the Ford Everest on 14,719 (17.6 per cent). Meanwhile, competitors like the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (3,306) and GWM Tank 300 (2,810) are well back in the pack.
Compared to the previous model, the latest MU-X offers some serious improvements in ride comfort, tech, and overall driving experience. The MU-X also stands out for its strong adult occupant protection score and child occupant protection score, which backs up its reputation for safety among family SUVs.
The Isuzu MU-X cost stays competitive in its class, and servicing is made simple with a flat price program that keeps ownership costs predictable. Many buyers also love the MU-X’s shared features and design cues with the D-Max, which adds to its appeal if you’re already familiar with Isuzu’s dual-cab ute range.
When you’re looking at towing and segment comparisons, the MU-X’s gross vehicle mass and gross combination mass are key specs you’ll want to check out, especially for towing and load management needs.
With spring holidays coming up, more MU-X stock is confirmed to land from September, which should ease those waiting times. Isuzu UTE is encouraging you to get your orders in early to secure delivery ahead of the peak travel season. If you’re planning any big family trips, this is welcome news.
Under the bonnet, the 2025 Isuzu MU-X packs serious punch with its robust 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine. You’re looking at 140kW of power and a hefty 450Nm of torque. Paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, the MU-X gives you decent acceleration. The transmission’s intelligent gearing helps keep fuel consumption in check, seeing a combined fuel consumption figure of just 8.3L/100km, which is pretty impressive for a large, seven-seat SUV.
For all of us that love venturing off the beaten track, the MU-X’s 4×4 variants come equipped with a rear diff lock and if it tickles your fancy, a ‘Rough Terrain Mode’. This combination should gives you a bit of extra confidence to tackle challenging tracks, slippery surfaces, and steep inclines.
Popular with RV owners, towing is another area where the MU-X really shines – with a maximum towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes, it’s ready to tow boats, caravans, or trailers with ease. The MU-X’s sturdy chassis and advanced trailer sway control system add peace of mind, keeping your load stable and secure on the move.
Safety is front and centre in the 2025 Isuzu MU-X, thanks to a suite of advanced driver assistance features. Intelligent ‘Adaptive Cruise Control’ takes the stress out of long journeys by automatically adjusting your speed to maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead. Rear Cross Traffic Brake helps prevent collisions when you’re reversing out of tight spots, while Lane Departure Warning keeps you alert to unintentional lane changes.
The facelifted MU-X isn’t just about the headline-grabbing X-Terrain. The line-up now spans four trims, giving you a choice between two diesel fuel type engines and both 4×2 and 4×4 drivetrains. All are paired with a six speed auto transmission. The MU-X’s interior features comfortable second row and third row seats, providing flexibility for families and adventure seekers. You can fold the third row seats to expand boot space, enhancing cargo capacity and practicality, while the second row offers plenty of comfort and easy access. Boot space is generous, even with the third row in use, and increases significantly when you fold the third row flat.
All variants come with dual front, dual seat, dual seat side, and dual full length curtain airbags as part of a comprehensive safety suite. Advanced driver assistance systems include autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a tyre pressure monitoring system for added safety and convenience. Steering wheel controls let you easily access infotainment and safety features, while vanity mirrors are included for both driver and passenger comfort.
Exterior highlights include bi-LED headlights and LED fog lights, especially on higher trims. The X-Terrain models and the MU-X X-Terrain flagship add unique features like fender flares, underbody spoiler, lower body side skirt, and a full width trim piece for a distinctive look. A full size spare wheel is standard, supporting off-road and touring needs, and 4×4 models feature a low range transfer case for enhanced off-road capability. Remote engine start is available on higher trims for added convenience.
