Off the back of Mercedes’ current contract to supply 4X4 and 6X6 vehicles to the Australian Army, Mercedes are now offering buffed-up G-Wagons to the Australian public.

The engine is Mercedes’ own 3L V6 diesel, which makes 135kW and 400Nm. This runs through a five-speed gearbox and two-speed transfer case, powering all four wheels. All three differentials are lockable – giving you more traction than a big political donation.

There are bolt-ons aplenty available from the factory, and they are all serious. A bullbar and snorkel come standard; and then you can up the ante with a winch, walk-on bonnet, auxiliary electrics, second spare and a ‘Speed Control’ hand throttle. How cool is it to see actual functional options and accessories, instead of sticker packs and wanky chrome?

What isn’t cool here is the price. For the wagon, start at $109,900. That excludes things like dealer delivery, stamp duty and rego. And if you want some options, keep going north.
