From September this year, Volkswagen’s best-selling Amarok model, the V6 Highline, will be equipped with the more powerful engine that was previously reserved for Amarok 580 variants.

That means the V6 Highline will now have peak outputs of 190kW of power from 3250-4500rpm (200kW on overboost) and 580Nm of torque from 1400-3000rpm, up from the current model’s 550Nm. The potent 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel engine is mated to an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission and it features a single-range full-time 4×4 system.

With class-leading power and torque outputs, it’s little wonder that Aussies lap up the Amarok V6 faster than any other market in the world. According to Volkswagen, close to 90 per cent of the 1229 Amaroks sold in Australia last month were V6 variants, of which most of these were Highline grades, making Australia the biggest market in the world for the Amarok V6. In fact, Australia is the second-biggest market in the world when it comes to Amarok sales, behind only Argentina where the Amarok is manufactured.

Standard equipment on the Amarok V6 Highline includes cloth seat trim, satnav, dual-zone climate control air conditioning, 18-inch alloys, stainless steel sports bar and side steps, bi-xenon headlights and LED DRLs, parking sensors, reversing camera and more. While the current Amarok V6 Highline 550 starts at $61,090, pricing for the upgraded Highline 580 is yet to be confirmed.

Despite recent challenges that have seen a marked downturn in Australian new vehicle sales so far in 2020, the Volkswagen Amarok had its third best sales result in June 2020, notching up 1229 sales for the month, which was up an impressive 10.2 per cent on June 2019. Despite the strong June 2020 sales result, the Amarok is still behind in year-to-date terms compared with 2019 –  in the first six months of 2020 Volkswagen sold 3548 Amaroks in Australia, which is down 19.8 per cent on the same period last year (4423 sales).

For context, the current Amarok V6 range is as follows:

  • TDI500 Core (m) $49,590
  • TDI550 Core (a) $52,590
  • TDI550 Sportline (a) $56,590
