The Milestar Patagonia X/T is aiming to take on the established players. We put the mud-terrain through its paces in the outback

Typically we take it with a grain of salt when a product comes out of the USA with rave reviews. In the case of Milestar Patagonia tyres, we had to sit up and take notice. It’s a brand with a rich offroad history in the States. Including a memorable 2022 King of the Hammers win with John Mathews taking out the Everyman Challenge Modified Class. His set of 37in Milestar Patagonia M/Ts crossing the finish line first.

Milestar have shown their hand by offering the X/Ts in a huge range of sizes right up to 40in. Which is incredible for what is essentially an all-terrain tyre. This commitment to the 4×4 scene has really paid dividends in the US. Milestar have been growing in popularity year on year, particularly in the Jeep scene.

We fitted a set of X/Ts in 35×12.5×17 and headed west to put them through their paces in the Aussie Outback. This model of tyre is aimed firmly at the hugely popular Toyo R/T. And it really takes the fight to the Japanese brand. There are a lot of similarities between the two, as well as a few key differences.

Constructed on a light truck carcass with a 3-ply sidewall, we expect the X/Ts to stand the test of time. With a silica infused cut and chip resistant tread compound, they’ve so far offered not only excellent traction in all weather, but a ride so quiet it’s more akin to a highway terrain than a bona fide offroad tyre.

Wet weather performance forms a big part of my opinion on a tyre. The Jeep Gladiator they’re fitted to is a daily driver often tasked with ferrying the kids around town. Safety is absolutely paramount. To this point the X/Ts have been as good in the wet as they have in the dry. Here’s hoping that continues.

What we have noticed in comparison to the tyre we ran previously is that the X/Ts excel in clearing the tread blocks. I really dislike the annoying noise you get when you pick up stones in the tread. Which so far seems to be quite rare with these tyres. That’s a huge tick for me.

We’ve racked up 10,000km fairly quickly with the X/T’s showing no visible signs of wear. Considering that we punished them over thousands of kilometres of high speed dirt in the outback, at full highway pressure, this is no mean feat. Time will be the real indicator here, but to this point, we’re pleased to report that these are as good or better than anything on the market.

35×12.5×17 as pictured retail for $599 each. We’ll report back in time to see how they fare over their full lifespan.
