Ford Ranger Super Duty Camper: Tommy Campers S6X Build

With a 4,500kg GVM straight from the factory, the new Ford Ranger Super Duty looks tailor-made for carrying some serious touring gear. Tommy Campers has put that theory to the test with its latest S6X Super Build.

The Ford Ranger Super Duty hasn’t exactly been designed for a quiet life. With a heavy-duty chassis and suspension, 4,500kg GVM, 8,000kg GCM and 130-litre fuel tank straight from the factory, it’s a Ranger built to carry considerably more than your average weekend load.

Which raises an interesting question: could the Ranger Super Duty be one of the best new platforms for a slide-on camper? Tommy Campers certainly seems to think so.

For its latest Super Build, Tommy Campers has taken a Ranger Super Duty Super Cab and fitted it with a custom heavy-duty Tommy tray and S6X slide-on camper. It then loaded the setup with the kind of gear you’d expect to find on a serious off-grid touring rig.

And unlike a concept build destined to spend its life under showroom lights, Tommy has already taken this one camping and across a weighbridge. Better still, you’ll soon be able to check it out for yourself. The completed Ranger Super Duty S6X will be on display at the Sydney 4WD and Adventure Show from 11-13 September 2026.

Why the Ranger Super Duty makes sense

Payload is one of the biggest considerations when building a ute-based touring rig, particularly once you start adding a tray, camper, water, batteries, recovery equipment and all the gear needed for an extended trip.

The Ranger Super Duty starts with some useful numbers. Its 4,500kg GVM is backed by an 8,000kg GCM, while under the bonnet sits Ford’s 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel producing 154kW and 600Nm. A 10-speed automatic and full-time 4WD are standard.

Tommy has used the Super Cab version for this build and replaced the factory rear setup with its own 2,100mm-long, 2,000mm-wide heavy-duty tray. The finished vehicle weighs 3,800kg, according to Tommy Campers, leaving 700kg before reaching its 4,500kg GVM.

There is an important catch to that figure, though. Tommy says the weighbridge figure was recorded with empty water tanks, an almost empty fuel tank, no camping gear and no occupants. So while 700kg sounds like plenty of breathing room, fuel, water, people, food and touring gear will all eat into it.

It’s a useful reminder of just how quickly weight can accumulate on even a heavy-duty touring build.

It’s sitting on 35s, too

The Super Duty hasn’t simply had a camper dropped onto the back. Tommy has fitted a JMACX coil-over-leaf suspension conversion along with 18×9 KMC 552 wheels wearing 35×12.50R18 Yokohama Geolandar X-AT tyres.

Up front is an Opposite Lock bull bar, while a Front Runner roof rack provides additional carrying capacity. Despite everything sitting on the back, Tommy lists the total height of the vehicle, camper and roof rack at 2,580mm.

A custom tray underneath the S6X

Supporting the camper is a custom Tommy heavy-duty tray constructed from 100mm RHS and finished in Protex Matte Black. Rather than allowing the camper to consume every available storage space, Tommy has incorporated front and rear lockable alloy toolboxes, a rear under-tray trundle drawer and a headboard water tank holding approximately 35-40 litres.

There’s also an integrated fuel filler, water outlet and anchor track. The toolbox doors have been colour-coded in Command Grey, which carries through to the camper sitting above them.

The Tommy Campers S6X

The S6X is Tommy Campers’ slide-on camper designed to provide more living and storage space without stepping up to a caravan or giving up the ability to tow something behind the vehicle.

In standard form, the S6X starts at approximately 326kg and includes a queen-size foam mattress, 75-litre water tank, LED ceiling lighting, 12V roof console and four lift-off legs. This particular camper, however, is a long way from standard.

Inside, there’s a couch with storage, pull-out table, extra-width under-bed drawer and a Clesana X1 waterless toilet. Tommy has also fitted two Sirocco fans, additional power points, three-colour interior lighting and a Cybertake S2 Pro heating and air-conditioning system.

The ceiling and couch receive new soft-touch fabric with custom stitching, adding a little more comfort to what is otherwise a very practical touring setup.

There’s plenty happening in the kitchen

The S6X has been fitted with Tommy’s Hybrid Kitchen, which combines an outdoor cooking and food-preparation area with access to selected storage from inside the camper. It incorporates four modular shelves, pantry tubs, a drop-down bench and slide-out sink.

Refrigeration comes courtesy of a full-height 115-litre Dometic NRX115C fridge, with an additional Dometic slide-out fridge also fitted. There’s a 20-litre Camec microwave, Duoetto MK2 10-litre electric hot-water system and an additional 75-litre water tank.

Combined with the headboard tank and standard 75-litre camper tank, there’s potentially a decent amount of water aboard once everything is filled, which is another reason that 3,800kg empty touring weight needs to be viewed in context.

460Ah of lithium and 480W of solar

The electrical setup is another highlight of the build. Tommy has used an Enerdrive by Dometic system centred around a 460Ah 12V lithium battery.

It’s paired with a 3,000W inverter/AC charger, DC-DC charger, MPPT solar controller and ePRO+ battery monitor. Two 240W semi-flexible solar panels provide a combined 480W of roof-mounted solar, while a 15A shore-power connection handles charging when mains power is available.

It’s a substantial electrical system for a slide-on and has been designed to run higher-draw appliances without requiring a generator or gas for everyday cooking. There’s even a powered Starlink roof mount for those who aren’t quite ready to disappear completely off-grid.

Touring gear everywhere you look

The list of accessories doesn’t end there. A Darche 270-degree freestanding LED awning provides shelter beside the camper, accompanied by a Darche Eclipse G2 shower tent. There’s a rear tyre rack, central locking, rear-door flyscreen and Maxtrax recovery boards, along with a Polaris reversing camera.

Tommy has also loaded the build with smaller touring additions including Front Runner Wolf Pack Pro storage boxes and camping chairs, a Crashpad dirty gear bag, Muk Mat bundle, C-Gear camper mat, Survival first aid kit and Firestryker suppression system.

It’s basically a complete touring package built around the Super Duty’s substantially higher carrying capacity.

Can the Ranger Super Duty change the slide-on game?

Building an equipped slide-on camper usually becomes an exercise in managing weight. Batteries, water, larger tyres, bars, trays, tools and recovery equipment all add up before you’ve put clothes in a cupboard or people in the cab.

Starting with a factory 4,500kg GVM doesn’t make those calculations disappear, as Tommy’s own 3,800kg weighbridge figure demonstrates. But it does provide considerably more room to work with.

And with the Ranger Super Duty arriving as a factory-engineered heavy-duty ute rather than relying solely on aftermarket upgrades to increase carrying capacity, it’s going to be interesting to see what Australia’s touring industry does with it.
