Clean diesel is now a thing thanks to LR’s mild-hybrid tech

Land Rover has introduced new inline-six-cylinder clean diesel mild-hybrid engines across its revised Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models.

Land Rover has replaced its SDV6 and SDV8 diesel engines with new six-cylinder Ingenium clean diesel engines that bring 48V Mild-Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) diesel technology to Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.

According to Land Rover, the new MHEV engines have been developed in-house and are available in D250 (183kW), D300 (221kW) and D350 (258kW) variants.

The 48V mild-hybrid technology not only ensures the new engines meet stringent global emissions regulations, but also that they deliver improved performance by storing energy generated during deceleration and redeploying it to assist the engine when accelerating. Land Rover says the mild-hybrid diesel engines meet the latest Real Driving Emissions Step 2 (RDE2) standards for nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

Here’s how it works:

According to Land Rover, “The Euro 6d-Final-compliant engine technology features series sequential turbos and an advanced after-treatment system, making it one of the world’s leading clean diesel engines. Pioneering technologies include a new high-pressure fuel injection system, which operates at up to 2500 bar and is able to deliver five injections per cycle with quantities as small as 0.8 milligrams in just 120 microseconds (0.00012 seconds) for enhanced efficiency and refinement.”

Land Rover also claims that the powerful D350 MHEV diesel provides the performance of a V8 engine with the fuel consumption and emissions of a six-cylinder engine.

Power and torque outputs for the three new MHEV engines are as follows:

• D250 3.0-litre six-cylinder MHEV: 183kW and 600Nm of torque from 1250rpm to 2250rpm (Range Rover Sport)
• D300 , 3.0-litre, six-cylinder MHEV: 221kW and 650Nm of torque from 1500rpm to 2250rpm (Range Rover and Range Rover Sport)
• D350 3.0-litre, six-cylinder MHEV: 258kW and 700Nm of torque from 1500rpm to 3000rpm (Range Rover and Range Rover Sport)

As well as these new diesel MHEV engines there’s also a choice the following petrol engines:

• P300 2.0-litre four-cylinder: 221kW and 400Nm of torque from 1500rpm to 4000rpm (Ranger Rover Sport only)
• P400e 2.0-litre four-cylinder PHEV: 297kW and 640Nm of torque from 1500rpm to 4000rpm (Range Rover and Range Rover Sport)
• P525 5.0-litre V8 Supercharged: 386kW and 625Nm of torque from 2500rpm to 5500rpm (Range Rover and Range Rover Sport)
• P565 5.0-litre V8 Supercharged: 416kW and 700Nm of torque at 3500-5000rpm (Range Rover only)
• P575 5.0-litre V8 Supercharged: 423kW and 700Nm of torque from 3500rpm to 5000rpm (Range Rover Sport only)
