Ford Europe is embracing eSports with the launch of its Fordzilla online racing teams which will pilot Ranger Raptor at European online gaming events.

To coincide with the reveal of Ranger Raptor joining Microsoft’s Forza 7 racing simulator, Ford has announced the launch of its Fordzilla eSports racing team(s). The intention is to have national teams in Italy, Spain, France, Germany and the UK with a European team being made up of “star players from each national team”.

“We at Ford have a racing pedigree that others can only envy. Now is the time to take that know-how and apply it to the world of esports – capturing the imagination of a new generation of virtual racing drivers, inspiring them to take a ride in one of our Ford Performance vehicles,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing Sales & Service, Ford of Europe.

Ford has been involved with eSports for some time now. In 2017, it became the first vehicle manufacturer to host a stand at Gamescon. And, last year, it revealed the Ranger Raptor, in Europe, at Gamescon. Forza 7 is one of the first sports the Fordzilla team will compete in with the Ranger Raptor the weapon of choice.

If you think computer games are just for kids, think again. These things are big business. Indeed, according to a report by NewZoo the eSports market is expected to generate $1 billion in revenue this year (2019). Contrary to the popular stereotype, the average gamer is in their early thirties.

Question: Do you play online racing games? What do you think about Ford investing in an eSports team?
