Don’t buy a van without reading this first.

We all know the vast expanses terrains of Australia and how they differentiate from state to state. From incredible coastlines to wetlands and red dirt country. It’s an honour to be able to travel all of it in my 4×4. If you’re looking to get into adventuring this incredible country, the first question you will find yourself asking is, what vehicle should I take? Whether you prefer creature comforts or getting to those extra remote locations, here’s a bit of a helping hand when deciding.

My 4×4 became my home

I got lucky. A 4×4 basically fell into my lap and I decided to make her my home. While travelling I have seen a range of rigs, including some pretty luxurious van builds. Maybe it’s from my experience but a van never quite interested me. WA has always been home, as a youngin’ we were always shooting down the beach in a beat-up Landcruiser which needed more than repairable rust treatment. I knew nothing about repairing 4X4s, or vans for that matter, so it was quite an even playing field, to begin with.

Since travelling for seven months now I can safely say that I have been more than happy with my decision, although people warned me of the costs associated with hitting the road solo with a petrol 4X4, it’s been normality for me as I budgeted for it and I pick up work when I need to top the bank account up.

Choose your vehicle based on your adventure

If you are on the fence about what vehicle is best for you, start by thinking about what you want to get out of travelling. Keeping in mind the vast terrains, the east has a relatively van-friendly coastline, with plenty of spots being accessible. The west is slightly less friendly, and you’ll be wishing your van came with locking hubs soon after crossing the border. Note down some of the iconic destinations you would like to see and decide which vehicle will get you to them all, and then consider every left and right turn between each iconic spot, will a van get you down them when you decide to follow your nose, or will you need a 4X4?

4X4s VS Vans

4×4 Pros:

  • Versatility, 4x4s can get you almost anywhere, from crossing rivers to sandy beach tracks, allowing you to go further and see more and get a campsite to yourself.
  • Parts, more availability for upkeep and modifications, there is more demand and competitive brands on the market.
  • Built tough, 4x4s are made to handle any type of terrain around Australia.
  • A gateway to adventure, 4x4s create an adventure out of the journey, connect you to nature and can allow you to feel like the only people around.
  • You’re more likely to turn heads with a 4×4

4×4 Cons:

  • Price, to buy and upkeep, 4x4s are more expensive
  • Less storage space, which means having to be minimalist and only pack the necessities.
  • Outdoor living, although the interior of the vehicle, rooftop or awning can offer shelter, you will be exposed to the elements.
  • Insurance, due to its value and risk bracket, 4x4s are more expensive to cover.

Van Pros:

  • Cheaper to purchase. This will obviously depend on the make, model and age.
  • Running costs are cheaper
  • Routine maintenance is cheaper
  • More space and storage, allow for those creature comforts such as inside living and more room for creativity with builds.
  • Protected from the elements, allows you to have a space to hide away from the elements such as wind and rain.

Van Cons:

  • Aftermarket parts, such as roof racks, suspension and bar work for vans are usually more expensive due to less demand and most models have to import from different countries! Basically, you get what you’re given.
  • Limited Access to remote tracks and areas, you are stuck to bitumen and well-graded roads
  • Smaller engines mean less power for overtaking
  • Less Freedom… unfortunately, you’re stuck where the tourists usually go
  • Stereotyped as a hippie from the ’60s… Although this may not be a con for you

The verdict

Based on the pros and cons, the 4X4 wins – put simply: a van will take you to a carpark, a 4X4 will take you anywhere. There will always be constant upkeep with any kind of vehicle you pick but if you take care of them, they will take care of you. From experience, even if you aren’t choosing to head off the beaten track all day, every day, a 4X4 is a more versatile option to tick off any terrain. Plus, most van lifers I have met, end up looking for or purchasing a 4X4 when they finally come to their senses.
