70 Series Cruisers rejoice at a better system to adjust rear bearing: the 3xFiner hubnut
There are indeed some talented people tinkering away in Aussie sheds. And some of them are not content to accept the shortcomings of original factory designs. Instead, they crave to find a better way.
Drew Sharpe is one such tinkerer. He’s a toolmaker who loves solving some of Toyota LandCruiser’s anomalies. Having come across the common problem of the full-floating rear bearings incorrectly set far too many times, he had the idea to design and manufacture an improved system. Its aim? To ensure the correct preload settings of the bearings are maintained.
Enter 3xFiner – with its three times finer adjustment of those bearings.
How? Simple really, once you see the system of three times more adjustability of the hubnut. Having all those extra drilled and tapped ‘stop’ or adjustment points available means the hubnut can be tensioned correctly against the bearing for perfect preload. With the standard Toyota system, the bearing could ultimately end up being loaded slightly too tight or too loose, rather than just right, which can be achieved using Drew’s replacement system.
What’s included in the kit?
The kit includes two fully engineered CNC-machined 4140 billet chromoly hubs (one for each side) which spin on as a direct replacement for the originals. Plus a three-pronged hubnut tool with a half-inch drive slot. Given the originals are steel, you can expect far superior strength from 3xFiner, and all threads are identical to Toyota specifications. Ease of fitting is guaranteed!
Given the same tightening system has been used from almost day one by Toyota, the 3xFiner replacement system suits the 40, 55, 60, 75, 76, 78, 79, 80 and 105 Series LandCruiser range.
For peace of mind, Drew assures us his system is fully engineered for on and off-road use, so its users will not experience legal or insurance issues.
