GWM Australia has just announced that the Cannon 4X4 ute will launch in Australia before the end of the year.

Great Wall Motors (GWM) will launch the Cannon 4×4 ute in Australia in Q4 2020 in three dual-cab model grades: the range-opening Cannon, mid-spec Cannon-L and range-topping Cannon-X.

The Chinese-developed GWM Cannon 4×4 ute is gunning for Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, and is based on the company’s P71 separate-chassis platform, which is also found under the Haval H9 4X4 wagon. Although Aussie specifications are yet to be confirmed, in China the Cannon comes with a strut-type independent front suspension and a live-axle rear-end with coil springs. We do know that in Australia the Cannon will be equipped with a leaf-spring rear-end to ensure a one-tonne payload and at least a 3000kg maximum braked towing capacity.

While Chinese-market Cannons are powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, Australia-bound Cannons will get a turbo-diesel engine mated to either a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. GWM says the 4X4 system has been developed by Bosch.

The Cannon is around the same size as a Ford Ranger at 5410mm long, 1934mm wide and 1886mm high, and with a 3230mm wheelbase, which will make it one of the larger dual-cab utes on the Aussie market. See here for more details.

The Cannon tub measures a reported 1520mm x 1520mm.

According to GWM Australia: “Exact features and specifications are yet to be fully disclosed but buyers can expect a high level of standard specification combined with compelling value.” In other words, the Cannon will likely undercut its rivals while offering plenty of standard equipment.

What we know so far is that the Cannon will be available with a large nine-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Lane Keep Assist, front and rear parking sensors and an extendable ladder for ease of access to the tub.
