Toyota’s pickup line-up to include an EV 2024 Tacoma

After last year’s news revealing Toyota’s plans to build an electric pickup truck, it looks like we’ll soon be seeing this EV truck concept come to life in the form of an all-new 2024 Toyota Tacoma.

Say hello to the 2024 Toyota Tacoma

Toyota’s Tacoma is well and truly on a pedestal – one made out of a whole stack of dollars. It goes without saying, this mid-size pickup has been a huge success in the US. It’s only been updated a handful of times since its creation in 1995. Given its success, I’m not surprised. But it does bear the question: why now? The update comes from Toyota’s new global body-on-frame architecture, otherwise known as TNGA-F. Its key benefits include its tasty versatility with a whole host of new powertrain, body styles and suspension options available. This new DNA is shared with Tacoma’s Australian cousin, the HiLux, the Lexus LX, and the next-gen 4Runner.

What we’re expecting

After the US launch of Toyota’s 2022 Tundra and Tundra i-FORCE MAX – both available as hybrid vehicles – we’re expecting this new wave of Tacomas to at least include an all-electric, all-wheel drive, and leaked information highlighted on the Tacoma4G forum confirms our guess. Thanks to inside sources, we’re confident that we’ll be looking at a battery-electric power and a four-cylinder hybrid powertrain Tacoma. The EV is estimated at $50,000 (USD), though the official price and details are yet to be confirmed.

Could this mean an all-electric pickup for Australia?

Toyota is making plans for the hybrid Tundra pickup to be launched in Australia – a vehicle that would sit between the HiLux and LandCruiser 300 Series. That said, given the shared architecture of the next-gen Tacoma and the HiLux, it wouldn’t be challenging for Toyota to launch an electric HiLux here in Australia. Could the 2025 next-gen HiLux include an all-electric ute? Whether we see the HiLux or the Tundra first, Toyota’s growing collection of EV pickups will no doubt make rivals, Ford, up their game. Watch this space.
