After an initial 2022 supply chain delay, Indian ute maker Mahindra has promised to fill a gap in the Australian market. Come 2023, Australian dealerships around the country will be showcasing the brand-new Scorpio-N, a 4WD SUV.
You might recognise the name Mahindra from their rugged Pik-Up ute. Similarly to this economical vehicle, the Scorpio-N is set to add depth to the Australian market, offering a 4WD rival to the likes of the Ford Everest and Toyota Prado.
Designed by the renowned Italian design house Pininfarina – known for their luxury Ferraris – our expectations are high for this new 4X4. Here’s what we know so far.
Power
Mahindra has promised to fill a gap in the market by offering “true 4X4 capability and diesel power in a compact SUV body”. Buyers will be able to choose between a six-speed manual or an automatic transmission. The 2.2-litre manual engine will produce 97kW of power and 300Nm of torque or with a manual transmission, you’re looking at up to 129kW of power and 400Nm of torque.
Features
What features does the Scorpio-N have? The vehicle is set to include low-range and multiple terrain modes; electric power steering; 17 or 18-inch alloy wheels; frequency-selective dampers; a double-wishbone front and Watter’s linkage rear suspension. In addition, the following features are currently available in India:

- 8.0-inch touchscreen
- USB-C points
- Apple CarPlay
- Android Auto
- Amazon Alexa
- Sat-nav
- Wireless charger
- Proximity key
- 12-speaker Sony sound system
- A reversed camera

Safety features
It is currently not clear whether the vehicle will include advanced safety technology. However, in 2025 the Australian regulations will require all vehicles to include AEB (autonomous emergency braking). As a result, we’ll no doubt see Mahindra make some changes over the next couple of years.

Price
Confirmed prices, dates and specifications will be announced nearer the time. For now, the Mahindra Scorpio-N is up for grabs for the equivalent of approximately $36,000 AUD in India. Let’s see what happens when it lands Down Under.

So the interesting features are:

Manual cars are mentioned twice, one with a 97kw engine and then 129KW. I suspect the 129 is for automatic transmission.
What is “Watter’s linkage rear suspension”? I’ve heard of “Watts linkage”.
What is a “reversed” camera? The back of it faces outside the body??
Otherwise this looks like an interesting car.
