We’ve already seen the pictures, and it’s safe to say the next generation Prado has gotten the internet fired up. Now, we know when the 2024 Toyota Prado will be arriving in Australia. Toyota has stepped up big time design-wise. Producing a modern-looking Prado, that brings a much-needed boost to the brand. Naturally, this is subjective, but in my personal opinion, the 2024 Prado looks sweet.
What’s the story?
Now, we can confirm, that the new generation Toyota Prado will be arriving on Australian shores in mid-2024. This line-up will include a new off-road-focused variant (nope, not a GR Sport Prado). There will be 48-volt technology incorporated across the range, which features five Prado variants.
The 2024 Prado will be available in GX, GXL, VX and the flagship Kakadu model. The off-road-focused model will be called the Altitude. This has been designed for adventure-focused customers that want to go further off-road, according to Toyota. We’re certainly keen to get out hands on this spec Prado later this year.
What does Toyota have to say?
Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the all-new LandCruiser Prado will continue to resonate with Australian families and adventurers.
“Over decades the Prado has become a favourite for Australians in need of an SUV able to transport the whole family during the week and go off the beaten path on the weekend, all with signature Toyota reliability,” he said.
“The new-generation Prado will continue the legacy forged by its predecessors when it arrives here later this year, with the addition of 48-volt technology and the new Altitude grade making it more appealing than ever.”
GX specification 2024 Prado
This is the starting point for the 2024 Prado line-up. This is a 5-seat only model. It will be distinguishable by 18-inch dark grey alloy wheels, an upper grille with Toyota lettering. LED headlights and daytime running lights, retractable body-coloured exterior mirrors, darkened front and rear bumpers, side sills, and wheelarches, and a manual tailgate with glass hatch
Inside the 2024 GX Prado, you’ll get cloth seats, a 7.0-inch MID display, automatic dual-zone climate control. There are all-weather rubber floor mats and a 220V power outlet in the rear. All every 2024 Prado will receive a 12.3-inch multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
GXL specification 2024 Prado
Notable inclusions in the GXL model, include roof rails, rear privacy glass, silver front and rear bumper trim and a powered tailgate.
Inside the GXL, you’ll find 7-seats with synthetic leather accents. Also, a 50:50 split fold back seat for the third row. Front seating sees both heating and cooling, which are 8-way adjustable. Genuine leather-accented steering wheel, and shift knob, as well as auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a wireless charging pad.
VX specification 2024 Prado
In the VX, you receive leather accented seats with driver seat power lumbar support, memory, four-way front passenger power adjustment, power-adjustable steering wheel, carpet floor mats, a refrigerated console box, and tyre pressure monitoring. a premium 14-speaker JBL audio system, while additional driving assistance for both on and off-road includes Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) and five-mode Drive Mode Select, Multi-Terrain Select, and in a first for Toyota, the Multi-Terrain Monitor system which provides a comprehensive view of the vehicle’s underfloor and surrounds when off-road.
Altitude specification 2024 Prado
The Altitude offers better off-road capability with the fitment of 18-inch matte grey alloy wheels with Toyo Open Country all-terrain tyres, a rear locking differential, and a new sway bar disconnect mechanism that offers an extra 10 percent wheel articulation. Very cool to see!
Available exclusively in five-seat configuration, the Altitude builds on the VX and inside, adds a digital rearview mirror, heated steering wheel and head-up display.
Kakadu specification 2024 Prado
Sitting at the top of the LandCruiser Prado tree, is the flagship seven-seat Kakadu. The Kakadu adds features over the VX including a panoramic moon roof, illuminated side steps, heated and ventilated rear seats, heated steering wheel, adjustable driver’s seat thigh support, digital rearview mirror, head-up display and a rear torque-sensing limited-slip differential to enhance handling when cornering.
Standard inclusions
As expected, all Prado variants will be powered by the same 150kW, 500Nm 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder powertrain with 48-volt technology. This is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The 2024 Prado will offer full-time all-wheel drive with a lockable torque-sensing Torsen centre differential and low-range gearing. 3,500kg braked towing capacity is standard across the range.
A total of eight exterior paint colours will be offered on the Prado. Including the new Altitude-exclusive Tanami Taupe and Ningaloo Blue, optionally available with a white roof.
Without 17″ wheels and diff lockers on the GX or GXL it’s a deal breaker for me. Toyota don’t get it, us off roaders want a basic vehicle with off road capabilities. Thoughs who buy the Kakado etc hardly ever take their cars off road, it’s the GXs and GXLs that are doing the touring and off roading. All that off road gizmo should be in the base models were it can be used or utilised.
Toyota has just handed more sales to the Everest and MU-X.
Sort of disappointing really. It’s a great looking vehicle, but it looks more like what I’ve always thought a Landcruiser should look like with nice square windows and a sense of presence, far more so than the 300 series to be honest. I have a 200 series and the 300, in my view, looks like a current Prado (particularly with that silly and now very common across-all-car-brands raked back rear side window). If they had made this 250 bigger and put a V6 in it, then they might be on a better track, but it seems Toyota designers are incapable of understanding what Landcruiser owners actually want. I’ll stick with my 200 thanks.
Yet another new vehicle clobbered with the ugly stick.
About as stylish as cardboard box from bunnings.
