When it comes to 12V air compressors, the market has been crowded with the usual suspects for years. ARB, TJM, Ironman. All of them solid, dependable, and priced accordingly. Then there’s Adventure Kings by 4WD Supacentre. For a long time, they’ve been the butt of plenty of jokes in the 4WD world: cheap, cheerful, and usually a “you get what you pay for” proposition. But the new Kings Thumper Max Digital air compressor might just change that conversation.
Straight out of the box, the Kings Thumper Max Digital air compressor doesn’t scream “budget gear.” The materials feel decent, the finishes are neat, and nothing looks flimsy. The hose and fittings? They’re standard quality, but crucially, they don’t reek of corner-cutting like some of the earlier Kings kit. It feels like Kings are making a serious push toward credibility here.
On paper, the Kings Thumper Max Digital air compressor is no lightweight. Moving air at 300L per minute, it actually outpaces a lot of compressors with much loftier price tags. And speaking of price, at an RRP of $249, it comes in at less than half of what some of the big-name brands ask for slower units. Performance per dollar is where this thing really shines.
The big talking point here is the digital functionality. At first glance, it’s easy to roll your eyes, another gimmick to slap on the box. But in practice? It’s surprisingly good. The compressor can run in two modes:
Dumb Mode – Hit the button and it works like any other compressor.
Digital Mode – Dial in the pressure you want, screw the chuck onto the valve, press the button, and walk away.
It cycles on and off like the servo air pump we’ve all used a hundred times, and in testing, the accuracy has been bang-on. No more kneeling in the dirt, crouched awkwardly with a gauge in one hand and flicking the compressor on and off with the other.
We’ve had set-and-forget tyre deflators for years, but inflators? That’s new territory. And it’s one of those features that you don’t realise you need until you use it. Instead of standing around waiting, you can be packing gear away, cracking a drink, or helping your mate figure out why his fridge stopped working. It takes a job that’s normally a chore and makes it painless.
I’ll be the first to admit I’ve never been a huge fan of Kings gear. But credit where it’s due: the Kings Thumper Max Digital air compressor is a serious step up. It’s fast, it’s well-priced, and the digital functionality actually improves the experience. The only thing surprising about it is that more people aren’t already running one.
So, does your compressor need to be digital? Maybe not. But after using this one, I reckon you’ll want it to be.
