Is Fuel Available In Cape York?
When you consider how remote it is, fuel is actually readily available on main routes throughout Cape York, and there are a few petrol stations located in Bamaga and Seisia. If you’re tackling the Old Telegraph Track, fuel up at Bramwell Station, and if you’re running low, the next closest fill-up will be at the Jardine River ferry.

Are Groceries Available In Cape York?
You’ll want to pack your supplies for Cape York as food is very expensive, and outside of Weipa and Bamaga it is scarce. You’ll find that stations will have a few essential items, but don’t expect anything fancy. The IGA in Bamaga has the honour of being the most expensive grocery store I’ve ever shopped at – and I’ve been to some fairly pretentious places in Europe.

The Vehicle: What You Need To Do
What Kind Of Vehicle Should I Take?
Under perfect circumstances you could take a two-wheel drive vehicle all the way to the tip of Cape York without issue. Rarely do things happen perfectly, and without four-wheel drive you’d miss everything that makes Cape York what it is. At a minimum, I suggest a high clearance four-wheel drive vehicle equipped with low range to get the most out of your adventure. Cape York can be as crazy as you want it to be, so you can modify until you see fit.

Modification Requirements:
If you’re cruising up the PDR with a light load, a stock four-wheel drive will get the job done, provided it’s in good shape, you have a decent set of tyres and you drive with sympathy. If you’re looking to get off the PDR and have a little bit of fun, you’ll want to upgrade the suspension and consider some bar work. There are only a few places you can’t go with a slightly larger tyre, a 50mm lift and a winch. Bring a fridge, I don’t know how you could get by without one on this trip, unless you like warm beer.

The Gear You Need For Cape York
In an earlier edition of Unsealed 4X4, fresh after my trip to the Cape, we did a pretty comprehensive guide to the gear you’ll want to bring with you on your adventure. So if you’re looking for some pointers on what to bring or what I thought was handy, have a look.

Water Crossings
Some of the most daunting challenges in Cape York involve getting you and your 4X4 a little bit wet. If you know what you’re doing, it’s relatively easy, but if you don’t know what’s going on, life can get a bit rough. As far as vehicle modifications go, you might be able to survive without a snorkel in Cape York, but it would certainly add a bit of stress to your journey. I’d recommend fitting one, along with extended differential breathers. Don’t forget to give your door seals a closer inspection too.
