Not only did the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux and Mitsubishi Triton dominate 4X4 dual-cab sales in January with considerable distance to Holden’s Colorado, but it also dominated total 4X4 sales. In general, January 2020 was down around 10,000 sales compared to January 2019, with the market realising 71,731 new vehicles sold last month.
Tony Weber, chief executive for the FCAI, said: “Given the broad range of environmental, financial, international and political issues facing Australia during January, it is no surprise to see the new vehicle market has reported a conservative start to the year”.
Toyota was the market leader in January with 14,809 sales and 20.6 per cent market share. Mazda claimed second place with 6695 sales (9.3 per cent share), followed by Hyundai with 5443 sales (7.6 per cent share), Mitsubishi with 5108 sales (7.1 per cent share) and Kia with 4705 sales (6.6 per cent share).
The Toyota Hilux (4X4 and 4X2 combined), with 2968 sales, again claimed the title of Australia’s best-selling vehicle, closely followed by the Ford Ranger with 2624 sales. Australia’s third favourite vehicle during January was the Toyota Corolla with 2370 sales, followed by the Toyota RAV4 with 2290 sales and the Mitsubishi Triton with 2075 sales.
Looking at the 4X4 segment, the Ford Ranger came out on top with 2446 sales, followed by the Toyota HiLux on 2296, the Mitsubishi Triton on 1850 with daylight between it and the Holden Colorado on 1068 sales. The Navara finished fifth on 614 sales with the Volkswagen Amarok with 537 sales, then came the Toyota 79 Series with 511 sales, the Isuzu D-Max with 473 and the Mazda BT-50 with 403 sales.
In the 4X4 wagon space (less than $70k) the Toyota Prado came out on top with 1230 sales, followed by the Ford Everest on 490, the Isuzu MU-X on 440, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport on 330, the Holden Trailblazer with 224 sales and the Jeep Grand Cherokee with 217 sales. The Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series shifted 751 vehicles while the Nissan Patrol sold 154 vehicles.
