Toyota Australia has announced a new factory-engineered GVM upgrade for selected HiLux models, giving buyers a significant boost in payload while retaining full factory warranty coverage.

Developed locally by Toyota Australia and due to arrive in August 2026, the upgrade will be available as a factory-fitted option on a range of work-focused HiLux variants.

Priced from $4000, the upgrade increases payload by between 372kg and 435kg depending on the model, with maximum payload figures reaching approximately 1525kg.

For tradies and tourers who regularly find themselves pushing the limits of their vehicle’s carrying capacity, it could be an easier alternative to an aftermarket GVM upgrade.

Toyota-backed peace of mind

One of the biggest selling points of the new package is that it is engineered, fitted and backed by Toyota.

Unlike many aftermarket GVM upgrades, the Toyota option retains the full five-year factory warranty and remains fully compatible with the vehicle’s safety systems.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations John Pappas said the new option would allow customers to get more from their HiLux while maintaining factory-backed support.

“Introducing a GVM upgrade option for the new HiLux will allow customers to maximise the vehicle’s already-excellent load-carrying capabilities, providing benefits to both fleet and private buyers,” Mr Pappas said.

“Being Toyota’s very own factory-fitted option, it ensures the HiLux retains its Toyota five-year warranty and is compatible with all safety systems giving it a real advantage over its aftermarket competition.”

What changes with the GVM upgrade?

The upgrade isn’t simply a paperwork exercise. Toyota says the package includes longer monotube rear shock absorbers, helping support the increased load capacity, and the vehicle’s ride height increases by up to 10mm.

Axle capacities have also been increased, with front axle capacity rising by 100kg and rear axle capacity increasing by 280kg.

The result is a substantial increase in payload capability for customers who regularly carry tools, equipment, canopies, service bodies, camping gear or towing accessories.

Which HiLux models get the upgrade?

The factory GVM upgrade will be available on six automatic 4×4 HiLux variants:

  • HiLux WorkMate Double Cab-Chassis
  • HiLux WorkMate Double Cab Pick-Up
  • HiLux SR Extra Cab-Chassis
  • HiLux SR Double Cab-Chassis
  • HiLux SR Double Cab Pick-Up
  • HiLux SR5 Double Cab Pick-Up

All eligible models are powered by Toyota’s 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine producing 150kW and 500Nm, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and dual-range part-time four-wheel drive system.

SR and SR5 double-cab variants equipped with the upgrade will also continue to feature Toyota’s 48-volt V-Active technology.

Factory GVM upgrade vs aftermarket GVM upgrade

Toyota’s decision to offer a factory-backed GVM upgrade is significant because it brings a solution that many owners have traditionally turned to the aftermarket to achieve.

For buyers planning to fit a canopy, drawer system, long-range fuel tank, bullbar, winch, roof rack and other touring accessories, payload can quickly become a limiting factor.

By offering a factory-engineered solution from day one, Toyota is giving buyers a way to increase carrying capacity while avoiding potential warranty concerns and engineering sign-off requirements often associated with post-registration modifications.

With Australia’s appetite for heavily accessorised utes showing no signs of slowing down, Toyota’s move could prove popular with both fleet operators and private owners looking to get more carrying capacity from their HiLux straight from the showroom floor.
