A Product Safety Australia notice has been issued to alert owners of certain Nissan D23 Navara models built between June and July 2020 for insufficiently tightened steering knuckle bolts that could result in a wheel detachment.
According to the Safety Recall notice: “The steering knuckle bolts may not be sufficiently tightened, which can cause the steering knuckle, hub and the bearing assemblies to become detached. If the front knuckle bolts gradually loosen, vehicle occupants may experience noise and vibration. If the vehicle is driven in this condition, the four knuckle bolts may completely loosen, resulting in wheel detachment.”
The notice also points out the obvious hazard that if the wheel detaches, “there is an increased risk of an accident that may result in injury or death of vehicle occupants and/or other road users”.
The good news is the recall only affects 242 vehicles sold in Australia between 21 July 2020 and 11 December 2020. The complete VIN list of affected vehicles can be found here: Product Safety Australia PRA 2020/18734
Nissan Australia says it will contact owners of affected vehicles in writing, and that consumers will be advised to contact their nearest Nissan Dealer to organise an inspection and, if necessary, replacement of the knuckle, hub and bearing assembly. The inspection and repairs will be carried out at no cost to vehicle owners.
