We’re on the home stretch with Project D-Max. Perry and the team from Pez’s 4×4 Fitouts has done the heavy lifting for us, and the D-Max is nearly ready to hit the tracks. Before we set it free though, there are a couple of key additions left to install. Especially before we consider any remote travel. Time for a service, replace the filters, install a catch can as well as a fuel/water separator.
Servicing – Ryco 4WD Service Kit
We decided to give the D-Max a service before leaving the workshop. There’s no point having all these awesome accessories installed, if the vehicle isn’t in tip-top shape. And it is now.
We ordered a Ryco 4WD Service Kit for Project D-Max, and had all the original filters swapped out. This includes the air filter, fuel filter, oil filter (with an oil change naturally), and lastly, the often-forgotten cabin filter.
All of which are super important to replace, especially if you are driving on dirt roads regularly, or are filling up from questionable service stations. While genuine Isuzu filters were an option, we found the Ryco filters to be more cost-effective while still offering the backing of a large company. Don’t cheap out with no-name filters. Ryco even offers new vehicle warranty protection, so we know we’re in safe hands.

Next Level – Water Fuel Separator Kit
For added peace of mind, we also had Perry install a Ryco Fuel/Water Separator to the D-Max’s fuel system. This simple but utterly clever device will remove any water or unfriendly particles from the fuel before it has a chance to reach expensive engine components. This Ryco Water/Fuel Separator kit will protect vital components such as the injectors and injector pump, which as you can imagine… aren’t cheap items to replace.
For the minimal outlay in time and money, it was a bit of a no-brainer to protect our fuel system. Especially considering the remote locations we find ourselves filling up Project D-Max.

One Step Further – Catch Can Kit
Being a newish vehicle, barely two years old, we also decided while the Ryco parts catalogue was out, to fit a Ryco Catch Can to Project D-Max. We’ve covered the topic of What is a Catch Can and How To Service a Catch Can previously. It’s safe to say we are a fan of fitting quality catch cans, such as this Ryco kit, to modern turbo-diesel four-wheel drives. You can even fit them to petrol-powered four-wheel drives too.

What next?
The good news is Project D-Max is now ready to explore. Stay tuned for next week’s update, as we do a full reveal, including a walk-around video. Then, we’ll be putting Project D-Max, up against a well-modified 79 Series LandCruiser to see if can keep up. Exciting times are ahead.
Big thanks
Again, we couldn’t have achieved this build so quickly and to such high standards, without the help of Perry and his crew from Pez’s 4×4 Fitouts. If you need servicing, auto-electrical, or 4×4 accessories installed in the Sydney area, tell him we sent you.
Can you advise where you located the fuel filter and catch can setup with a picture please. I have a 2017 MUX with a duel battery setup in the engine bay. So far I haven’t been able to find a suitable location for the items you have mentioned. It would seem that the DPF also restricts the available mounting room for the filters. Any clues would be appreciated.
Thanks,
George
i got a 2022 dmax it has got a light dimming approximately every 5 seconds it is barely noticeable. dealer said they would have to disconnect aftermarket stuff to look at it. Told them it was there before aftermarket stuff put on. they were not interested. all i want is to get it fixed. what do you think it could be. or is there are other dmaxs with the same problem.
No mention as to whether these assessories will affect the manufacture warranty?
