GWM Tank 300 finally gets a diesel variant

Arguably the best bang-for-buck 4X4 on the market, the GWM Tank 300 has had its range expanded with a long-awaited turbo-diesel powerplant. While the earlier versions had a 2.0L turbo petrol four or the same engine backed up with hybrid power, the new turbo-deezy adds to the already well-equipped Tank range and potentially gives Great Wall Motors’ Aussie customers some added incentive to take their Tanks out on tour.

The new diesel engine is borrowed from the GWM Cannon. It’s the 2.4L four-banger bolted up to a 9-speed auto that puts out 135kW and 480NM, which, it has to be said, are fairly paltry numbers in the modern era. Still, the economy is a reported 7.8L/100km, which, while not great, isn’t terrible either, and the diesel models can now tow up to 3000kg, which is a significant upgrade over the 2500kg the petrol and hybrid models can pull. Plus, the relatively svelte 2280kg kerb weight will go some way toward offsetting the lack of engine mumbo.

“The introduction of the new Tank 300 diesel builds on the success of our rugged off-road range, offering customers a more powerful yet highly efficient powertrain option,” said Steve Maciver, Head of Marketing & Communications at GWM. “With impressive towing capability, refined performance, and two well-equipped grades, this new variant reinforces our commitment to delivering versatile and capable vehicles.”

Two grades – Lux and Ultra Tank

Two grades, the Lux and Ultra Tank, are on offer, with the Lux costing $47,990 and the Ultra ringing in at $51,990. Both represent some pretty excellent value with the inclusion of front and rear lockers (a must for every 4WD, in our opinion) as well as everything else found in the petrol turbo and hybrid models. The inclusions list on these things is longer than your arm, and they’re well-proven off-road with a nice short wheelbase and enough driveline strength to handle big rubber. We’re actually looking forward to seeing more and more modified versions of the Tank getting around. It won’t be long, we reckon.

Adding further value to the Tank 300 is the 7-year unlimited km warranty that comes with 7-years of roadside assistance and 7-year capped price servicing, which, it has to be said, is better than decent. As an added bonus, anyone who orders one in March 2025 will receive three years of complimentary servicing. Geez, that’s hard to argue with.

If you’re somebody who loves value, genuine off-road capability, and enough mod-cons to satisfy a private jet owner, the Tank 300 diesels could be right up your alley. This is where you will find your nearest dealership of you’re interested in some further information.
